With Pratyush's speed of 3.7 pentaflops and Mihir's speed of 2.5 pentaflops, both supercomputers got ranked at 67th and 120th respectively.
TOP500 project, which had started in 1993, twice a year comes out with an updated list about top supercomputers. This year, two of India’s supercomputer got mentioned in the list once again. The two supercomputers are Mihir and Pratyush, ranked at 67th and 120th respectively.
International Supercomputing Conference High Performance 2020 Digital event that took place virtually on 22nd June announced these rankings.
However in contrast to their previous performance last year, both Pratyush and Mihir had witnessed a dip in their rank. In a list that determined the most swift supercomputers of the world, Pratyush was stood 57th while Mihir got the 100th rank.
Pratyush is the fastest supercomputer ever made in India and can now be found at the Indian Institute of Meteorology. It records processing speed of 3.7 petaflops.
Mihir is placed at National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecast in Noida and it has recorded speed of 2.5 petaflops.
These supercomputers were developed after Ministry of earth sciences asked for them as they help in forecasting future disasters like flood, earthquakes, drought etc. Thus, many natural disasters can be avoided by using them resulting in saving of human and animal lives.
Overall, the TOP500 list was dominated by China and USA. However, the best supercomputer turned out to be made by the Japanese. The supercomputer was named Fukagu and its performace recorded processing speed of 415.53 petaflops.
