With their new high end RB5 platform, the robotic industry is going to witness a huge change.

Qualcomm is one of the biggest companies in the world when it comes to developing chipsets, software and technology that is wireless.

Now the California based company has launched their greatest and most advance piece of technology that consolidates the utilization of 5G and Artificial Intelligence. The motive behind such innovation was assistance in robotics and this will help in fields like Robotics Vision, FastCV Computer Vision, Machine learning and Neural Processing SDKs to name a few.

This platform is known as RB5 and will be powered by a Qualcomm QRB5165 processor which combines Qualcomm Adreno 650 GPU, Octa Core Qualcomm Kryo 585CPU, ISPs and multiple DSPs.

It will also house Spectra 480 Image Signal Processor (ISP) which makes RB5 capable of handling seven cameras at the same time for top notch mapping and navigating.

This new innovation by Qualcomm is also capable of taking photos at 200MP, recording of 8K videos at 30fps and 4K HDR videos at 120fps.

RB5 is capable of operating in extreme temperatures ranging from -40 degree Celsius to 105 degree Celsius. This makes it a fit for both industrial and commercial activities and the cherry on top is that its lifetime can be extended until 2029.

The industry has several protocols like EtherCAT and TSN which RB5 is compatible with.

It also supports OpenCV, OpenCL and OpenGL. RB5’s connectivity options include 5G, Wi-Fi, LTE and CBRS.

About their motive, the tech giants commented “With the Qualcomm Robotics RB5 platform, Qualcomm Technologies will help accelerate growth in a wide array of robotics segments such as autonomous mobile robots (AMR), delivery, inspection, inventory, industrial, collaborative robots and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), enabling Industry 4.0 robotics use cases, and laying the foundation for the UAV Traffic Management (UTM) space.”

As per conducted by ABI Research, around 60 million robots have been sited this year so far and by 2025 over 120 million might come into action.

We can expect Qualcomm RB5 to be available in the market by the end of 2020.
